There's nothing more frustrating than having a bad hair day. You're tempted to call the salon for a professional blow-out, but remember how expensive it can be. Fortunately, there's a new hair care trend that will give your mane the boost it needs, without the added expense.
You may want to rethink everything you know about shampoo and conditioner. We were all taught that shampoo comes before conditioner (unless you're a co-washer), and didn't question this tried and true process - until now.
Thanks to beauty experts, the order of how you wash your hair can make all the difference. This new hair craze is taking over the beauty world, and for good reason.
Both hair care professionals, as well as hair product lines, are now advocating that we reverse the routine to get a thicker mane. This means conditioning before you shampoo. The trend is especially revolutionary for those who have thin hair, as it helps add volume. Nina Dimachki, artistic director for Kérastase, says that by switching the order in which you wash your hair, you can see some incredible results.
"Conditioning before you shampoo is great for adding nourishment to fine hair without weighing it down. It also promotes a longer lasting blowdry and primes the hair before cleansing, allowing shampoo to distribute easier and more evenly."
You can benefit from the condition-first method, even if you don't have fine hair. Hair that tangles easily, that is highlighted, or is prone to being greasy benefits, too. A conditioner that has keratin-associated proteins, like Kérastase's Résistance Thérapiste collection, is formulated for conditioning before shampoo, because the nutrients in the conditioner help protect, smooth and strengthen hair before cleansing.
If you are volume obsessed, you're in luck, as Tresemmé just added the reverse system to its arsenal. The pre-conditioner and shampoo is formulated for those who want a bigger, thicker looking mane. Its instructions specifically say to use the conditioner before the volume boosting shampoo, so be sure to follow their directions for your best hair day yet.
If you still want to try this new hair care trend and don't want to get all new products, don't worry - you can still try this regimen with your existing shampoo and conditioner. Just use your conditioner (or hair mask) before you shampoo your hair. Be sure you use conditioner from root to tip, as you'll want to maximize the moisture and smoothness before cleansing with shampoo. Nina says this step is incredibly important for best results.
"You will be cleansing it after, so your hair won't be weighed down or oily. If you typically lather up twice, she says to scrub the conditioner into your hair like a shampoo instead, equating it to an oil cleanser for your face."
Watch and see the difference the reverse system makes on your hair.
Now that the winter months are almost here, your mane can use all the hydration it can get. But, weighing your hair down with heavy conditioner isn't a good look for anyone. By reversing the way you wash your hair, you'll get the best of both worlds. And the best part? You don't have to buy any new products - just remember to use the conditioner before you shampoo.
