Everything is bigger in Texas as the saying goes, and it's no exception when it comes to granny power. 74-year-old Rebbie Roberson lives by herself in Bowie County, Texas. On a recent Sunday night, granny Rebbie was getting ready to watch the nightly news when the unexpected happened.
The worst fear for many of us came true for granny when a masked and gloved burglar broke into her living room. Rebbie says,
"And when I started to get up, he was in here on me, with a gun facing me right to my face."
What she did next is perhaps not something many of us, regardless of the age, would have the guts to do. While some would have just frozen in place, granny Rebbie decided to reach for a small .38-caliber pistol she always keeps in a table near by.
"So I had to walk right out in front of him...I reached over there and grabbed this gun. And when I swerved around, I pointed it at him and he ran."
In all likely hood, granny's bravado is what threw the burglar off his game and he decided to leave before waiting to see what else Rebbie was capable of doing. But Rebbie followed him firing the pistol and leaving bullet holes all over her walls.
The suspect managed to escape, however, no one at this time can be sure whether one of the bullets hit him or not. Bowie County Sheriff's Department was on the scene shortly after and were thankful that the situation didn't get any worse for either individual. Regarding granny's actions, Chief Deputy Jeff Neal added later,
"Every citizen, according to the Texas penal code, has the right to defend themselves and their family."
Rebbie claims that even though she always has the gun nearby, this was the first time that she had to use it. Still, her decision to act was a simple calculation,
"...He's going to kill me or I'm going to kill him."
Granny Rebbie recalls the horrid incident and her actions in this video.
When granny Rebbie hunkered down to watch the Sunday night news, little did she know that her actions were about to make her a part of the news too. Granny Rebbie's story sheds light on the increasing debate about gun ownership and personal protection. In this case however, we'd like to believe that it was granny's courage to be bold and fearless that scared the burglar away.
