Dog Is Left To Die Within Crate, Then Officer Inspects The Body And Makes Alarming Discovery

One of the least pleasant aspects a law enforcement officer must face involves investigating and cleaning up after very distressing situations. When police officers in Austin, Texas received a call about a dead dog that was caged inside a crate on the side of the road, they knew the encounter would be upsetting. But, they still had to do their job.
Shockingly, the crate was left right alongside a busy intersection near downtown Austin, and anyone who stumbled upon the scene would have been in for a disturbing surprise. The officers knew they needed to remove the evidence as soon as possible, so that innocent bystanders wouldn't be exposed to the horrors of humanity.
When officers approached the metal crate, trepidation set in. None of them really wanted to see what was inside. After further inspection, the cops weren't prepared for what they were about to discover.
The Austin, Texas Police Department's Animal Cruelty Division received a report about a dead dog inside of a crate on the side of a busy street. When they looked inside, the thin body of a young female dog could be seen lying on top of an island of feces. She was covered in urine and rainwater, and it was evident she had been in this condition for a while.
Cruelty officers are used to seeing the worst of the worst, but it goes without saying that it's still a horrible thing to witness. Poking out from her matted fur was a pretty rhinestone collar, which was dismally ironic. Someone must have cared for this precious little girl at one point in her life, before she was carelessly tossed aside.
It seemed like such a heartbreaking end to what could have been a beautiful life. However, not everything is always as it first appears...

Due to sad circumstances that were beyond her control, Officer Eva Wagner was forced to look down upon the body of a dog that was starved and emaciated. The officer took a disheartening mental note of the bones protruding from the puppy's body... but then miraculously, she saw the pup's rib cage move up and down!
This doggy was still alive, but just barely. She needed help, and fast! Realizing that her life was hanging by a thread, the officers quickly rushed her to the Austin Animal Center for emergency treatment.

The dog's near-lifeless 9-pound body was handed to Elizabeth Mancera, who was the veterinary technician on duty that day.
"The day she came in was a really hard day. She was not really moving. She was barely breathing. She couldn't stand."
Elizabeth worked as fast as she could to keep the puppy alive. A catheter was placed, and the dog was gingerly bathed to remove all the yucky filth. The frozen pooch then received a hot air bath from a blow dryer for over 2 hours, which helped keep her body temperature up. She was so frigid when she arrived at the center, that her core temperature didn't even register on the thermometer.

The one-year-old boxer mix looked at the veterinary tech with pleading eyes as she was receiving life-saving care. But, she didn't need to beg for her life anymore. The puppy was in the safest place she could possibly be. Elizabeth knew how important it was for this dog to feel loved, and how the sound of a comforting voice has the power to heal.
"She just kept looking at me, and I was just talking to her to let her know that we were here... When I called her Sophie, she kind of looked at me, and that's when I just knew she was going to be OK."
Sophie needed round the clock care, and Elizabeth was given permission to foster the dog. At first, Sophie needed a doggy diaper since she couldn't stand or walk around on her own. That didn't bother Elizabeth, who was happy to care for the puppy and would do whatever it took to get her healthy again!

Although it was touch and go for a while, Elizabeth never left Sophie's side. Thankfully the doggy was able to walk again, and gained a healthy amount of weight after just one month. This gorgeous girl with chubby cheeks made a full recovery, and Elizabeth was allowed to adopt her permanently.
You won't believe the happy life that Sophie is now leading! Not only did Sophie gain a doggy best friend, but she also has a new extended human family to play with, too! Her backyard playground is humongous, and her new life is everything she could have ever dreamed of.
Best of all, she's truly loved and adored!
This amazing pooch also has a new job as a mascot for the Austin Police Department Animal Cruelty Division. Since they were instrumental in her rescue, Sophie wanted to give back by helping them fight the bad guys!
Some of the perks of the job include unlimited cuddles, and going on fun field trips! What puppy could argue with those awesome benefits?
Sophie is now living the good life in her version of doggy heaven! She wants to give you a cheeky wink to let you know exactly what she thinks of Elizabeth and everyone else that was involved in her rescue. Since there's no dog equivalent of emoji's, this is her adorable way of giving all the good people in her life a big thumbs up. You go girl!

This poor puppy had such a rough start in life. It was horrible what she had to go through to get to where she is now. Yet, now she's exactly where God meant for her to be - in her loving forever home!
