Divine Intervention Led Dad to Save Woman At Store

When Grand Rapids, Michigan, dad of three Ty Zerby made a nighttime run for some gummy bears, he didn't realize he'd end up a hero by the time the night was over. Ty heard chilling screams pierce through the air of a Meijer grocery store parking lot. Then he says that God had three simple words for him...
It all started that night when 20-year-old Victor Gonzalez eerily followed a female shopper out of the Meijer store in Walker. He then attacked her, and bound her hands with string and duct tape. He tossed her in the front seat of his car and did even more horrible things to the woman.

Ty was innocently out grabbing gummy bears for his wife and kids when he heard the woman screaming. He had no idea what was going on. Instead of ignoring it, he stopped to investigate.
"I heard a lady yelling, screaming, like death-curdling screams. It looked like the guy was punching her. I didn't realize what was going on. It was a scary deal, just so scary, man."
Ty bravely intervened by trying to pull the assailant off the woman. While they were wrestling, the duct tape over the woman's mouth came loose. She screamed that the man was stabbing her. He wasn't just punching her.
While trying to rescue the woman, the attacker whacked Ty in the mouth with a hammer, cracking his teeth. Ty grabbed the man's coat, but he wiggled free and took off running. Ty pursued him, but realized he couldn't catch him.

Ty then turned back around to help the woman and tend to her stab wounds. He turned his key chain lanyard into a makeshift tourniquet to quell the bleeding from her leg until the medics arrived. He wasn't going to leave her side.
"You know, somebody in need like that, you can't just turn your back on them. I'm trying to be a good dad and I just want my sons to be proud of me and I think that's all it boiled down to."
Not only did the 38-year-old dad want to be a good role model for his boys, but he said there was some divine intervention prodding him to help. There's no way he could ignore that.
"I feel like God said, ‘you could help' and I've been helped so much, man. I've been helped so much in my life."
Nine-year-old Brennan, Ty's son, said he was very proud of his dad. He was even prouder to be his son.
"My dad's a very good hero, he could save lives."
The assailant was later gunned down by police while escaping from a bar and restaurant. He has been charged with four criminal counts including assault with intent to commit great bodily harm, assault with a dangerous weapon, unlawful imprisonment and carjacking. He faces life in prison.
Here's more on this harrowing story that ended well because of a Good Samaritan.
Thanks to Ty's willingness to intervene and save the woman's life, she is expected to make a full recovery from the attack. Thank goodness she's okay and that there are everyday heroes like Ty walking among us, willing to help when danger strikes.
