When a Providence, Rhode Island, motorist walked into Judge Frank Caprio's courtroom, she was quite nervous, flushed and fidgeting. Her parking ticket was about to be debated before the honorable judge and she wasn't sure which way his decision would go.
It was a tricky case and really was splitting hairs. But Judge Caprio read her case and instantly couldn't wipe the smirk from his face. He just couldn't believe that such a crazy case had been brought to his courtroom.
So a city parking enforcement officer issued her a ticket with two-tenths of a second to spare. The motorist testified before the judge that her car clock said 10 a.m. and she thought she was fine. She didn't contemplate the fact that her clock might be off by a couple of seconds.
Inspector Quinn, a city official who was on hand, replied that "10 a.m. is 10 a.m." But fortunately, Judge Caprio decided that 9:59:58 a.m. was close enough to 10 a.m. that she shouldn't have to pay the parking fine.
The motorist was red faced and tried to squelch her giggles, considering the judge was making light of her situation. Judge Caprio took pity on her and ended up dismissing her case, much to the motorist's relief.
What do you think? Should she still have received the ticket since she parked there two-tenths of a second before she could? Or should the ticket have never been issued and wasted taxpayer money?
