What You Didn't Know About Jeff Bridge's 40-Year Marriage

We rarely get the chance to glimpse into the private lives of celebrity couples who deliberately stay under the gossip radar. But, in an interview on Oprah's Master Class, actor Jeff Bridges opened up his heart and showed us why true love doesn't need a spotlight to shine bright.
Most people don't know that "The Dude" from the classic cult film The Big Lebowski has been with his wife, Susan Geston, for over 40-years, and that she's the only woman he's ever been married to. That alone makes this couple a Hollywood relationship anomaly!
Yet, that's only the beginning of an unbelievable love story that has spanned decades and reached near-mythic proportions. In a perfect world, everyone would be lucky enough to experience a love like theirs.
The Hollywood actor met his wife back in 1975 at a hotel in Montana, where he was filming Rancho Deluxe. Even though she was sporting two black eyes and a broken nose at the time, he still couldn't take his eyes off the blonde beauty.
It was love at first sight for him, but she actually rejected his advances when he finally mustered up the courage to ask her out. On Oprah's Master Class series, Jeff cheekily mimicked his wife's deadpan response:
"No. It's a small town, maybe I'll see you around."
Thankfully, she was right, and the two bumped into each other a couple of days later. This time they hit it off, and after filming ended Sue followed the rising Hollywood star to California.
Of course, anyone who has been in a long-term relationship knows that peaches and cream can sometimes taste like rocky road. Two years after they met, Sue told Jeff that she intended to move back home to Montana.
Her biological clock was ticking, and she wanted to be a wife and mother. The Hollywood hunk was still in his 20's and wasn't sure if he wanted to be married. But after Sue delivered her ultimatum, Jeff suddenly realized that he would forever regret it if his one true love slipped away. He told OWN:
"I said, 'Oh God, I can't let this woman go.' I had this vision of an old guy thinking there was this girl from Montana, man, why didn't I marry her. I pictured, like, a handful of sand and there was a little diamond in there and I'm letting it go."
He didn't even have to think about his next move - Jeff immediately got down on his knees and proposed to her. Five days later, they were blissfully wed! It's now been 40 years, and he hasn't looked back since.
About ten years after the couple were married, Jeff recalls receiving a letter from the makeup artist who worked on the set of Rancho Deluxe, where he first met Sue. The crew member had been going through his files when came across an old photo of Jeff asking a local girl out on a date.
"Out of this envelope falls these two pictures of the first words I ever spoke to my wife. I have it in my pocket, they're my prized possessions."
Jeff then stopped the interview for a moment so that he could fish out his wallet and proudly show off the love of his life. With a cheeky grin, the actor gazed at his soul mate with the same puppy dog eyes he had for her back then.
"Look at that, isn't she gorgeous?"
You can see it in his eyes - he was falling in love with his wife all over again every time he caressed those precious memories.
Jeff later realized that there was no reason to fear marriage. It actually opened up brand new doors that he never knew existed.
"What you don't know until you get married is that you think all the other doors close - which is true. But this doorway you open [with marriage] is a hallway lined with all these other brilliant doors - kids, deeper intimacy, adventures, and everything else."
However, it's not just the new adventures that make a life-long partnership worth having. When you're truly committed, it just gets better with age - just like a fine wine!
"What they don't tell you about marriage is that it just keeps getting better on all levels... Intimacy is what we're all looking for. It's kind of a big high."
Wow, I had no idea. Jeff Bridges is a such a romantic "Dude" at heart! I don't even have the words to describe how much this amazing man radiates inspiration, love, kindness, and positivity!
