Maelyn Jarmon introduced herself to the judges as a New Yorker, but she's originally from Texas. When she was just five years old, Maelyn joined the local theater. Since a very young age, Maelyn has performed on stage. She has always loved singing, so it wasn't a big surprise when she moved to New York at the tender age of seventeen.
She had signed on to do a musical in the Big Apple, got an agent, and is now a proud New Yorker. Prior to joining the singing competition, Maelyn had already been doing some pretty heavy musical shows. She had performed at Carnegie Hall and had even shared the stage with Tony-nominated Ramin Karimloo, a multi-awarded Broadway actor who had been in The Phantom of the Opera and Les Misérables.
Then, this 25-year-old young woman decided to try her luck in The Voice Season 16. When it was her turn, she sang "Fields of Gold" for the Blind Auditions. The judges waited patiently as the first note began. Then, Maelyn opened her mouth, and multi-awarded singer-songwriter Kelly Clarkson immediately went, "Oh."
Adam Levine had his head bowed as he listened to the melody. The audience cheered and clapped when Maelyn's voice caressed their hearts and ears. Even John Legend looked like he couldn't believe he was hearing such a voice. He was clearly impressed. But it was Adam Levine and Blake Shelton who first turned their chairs. Kelly followed a beat later, but John remained with his back to the young singer.
Maelyn's family was ecstatic. They couldn't believe their eyes. With his eyes closed, John took the song in before pressing the buzzer and turning around. The crowd went wild. Maelyn now had four chairs. The judges gave her a standing ovation, along with the rest of the audience.
Blake praised the woman for her strong vocals, saying that Maelyn's voice had moved him. The judges' compliments brought the young woman to tears. Maelyn's voice certainly is magical, but what's more astounding is the fact that she used to have ear infections as a child.
This left her deaf in her right ear, with only 80 percent hearing in her left. Clearly, that didn't stop Maelyn from pursuing what she loved. After her performance, she chose John Legend as her coach.
Maelyn's story shows that nothing can stop you from pursuing your passion if you have the courage to try.
