Life can be surprising. It can lead us to paths we didn't know we could take. For some people it closes a door. For others that same exact door opens to give them something they have always wanted.
For one woman she never expected to be a mother to the little baby she had been taking care of at the hospital where she worked. First, she was his nurse. Then, in an unexpected twist of fate, she became his mother.
Angela Farnan works as a primary charge nurse at OSF Children's Hospital of Illinois. One of her patients in the pediatric intensive care unit was a little baby named Blaze. Blaze was born with a congenital heart defect called hypoplastic left heart syndrome.
Because of this condition, Blaze required two surgeries at such a young age. He underwent his first surgery when he was just three days old. He got his second one just a few months later. A child with Blaze's condition requires intensive care, so he had his own team of caregivers after the surgeries.
Angela was one of those people who took care of Blaze. She became so attached to the little boy that she and her husband agreed to look after him in between surgeries. Blaze's mother also realized something--that she couldn't afford the intensive care that Blaze needed.
She tearfully talked to Angela about the couple potentially adopting Blaze. The nurse couldn't have been more surprised. She had always wanted to be a mother, but she never expected it to happen like this. In an interview with CBS News, Angela, she said:
"I've always wanted to be a mother. And then you just have to realize and trust in God and believe that He has a greater purpose for you."
She also said that God has put them in the right place at the right time. When Blaze's biological mother had approached them, Angela was ecstatic but also sad for the mother who had been in tears. Angela becoming Blaze's mother now seemed like such a natural conclusion.
She had always been there for him before and after his surgeries, and she was willing to give him the care he needed. Angela's husband was just as ecstatic. He first thought that it would only be on a temporary basis, but when he found out that Blaze would be a permanent part of their family, he couldn't find the words to describe how happy he felt.
Blaze will face tough times ahead, but he'll always have the support of a loving family who will never give up on him.
