The power of music crosses borders and it definitely breaks language barriers. On March 3, popular talent competition American Idol kicked off its 17th season wherein one of the first who auditioned was 19-year-old Myra Tran, a Vietnamese who may have an Asian accent but definitely not one that hindered her amazing vocals!
With her rendition of Jennifer Hudson’s “One Night Only”, she blew the judges away with her superb singing skills and emotional connection. She is just a high school student, but her talent is way beyond her years!
Myra came to the U.S.A. from Vietnam about a year ago. She is still learning the American culture, but if there is one thing that she certainly knows how to make others understand, it would have to be her beautiful and spectacular voice!
She grew up dreaming about “being able to sing in front of the American Idol audience”. And now that she is finally on the show she is determined to show the judges what she can do. She gave a performance that was totally unexpected! Her big voice was not something the judges expected from someone so petite like her!
Her performance was such a beautiful rendition of the song that the judges were instantly blown away by her. At one point Katy Perry’s jaw even dropped because Myra belted such high notes! What an amazing talent indeed!
When she finished her song, the judges simply had to stand up and clap their hands out of sheer admiration of her marvelous performance. Lionel Richie, another judge of the show, just could not stop saying “Wow!” after Myra’s song number.
The most amazing comment of the night would have to be when Luke Bryan, the show’s third judge, said:
“You’re up there with the Kelly Clarkson’s of the world. That’s the only way I can say it.”
Katy Perry also gave really valuable comments that Myra is surely going to take to heart:
“You just need to keep singing because I think, if you keep singing, you’re really gonna connect with people. I think we can really feel who you are through the music. I feel like music transcends language barriers and you just showed us that.”
Myra was just so overwhelmed with the judges’ comments that she could not help but cry happy tears. As expected, the judges were unanimous in their decision to bring her to Hollywood for the next round of the competition.
