How important is the exterior design of a home? For most homeowners, preserving the exterior of a house is as important as the upkeep of its floors, walls and rooms. An attractive exterior adds personality and appeal to the property. It can also reflect the owner's personal taste and character. For instance, a sunny home can give the idea that its residents have cheery dispositions. A well planned color palette increases the aesthetic value of a house and its surroundings. The color of a home's exterior actually affects people's perception of the property. For example, bright colors such as light yellow or burnt orange are cheerful colors, gray or taupe are more natural and conventional.
Emilio Rodriguez' house in Pflugerville certainly stands out among the other homes in his neighborhood. It's not the usual taupe, brown or brick colored house with white trim. It is a bright bubble gum pink house from roof to gutter, and there's a reason Emilio chose this color. According to him, pink is a perfect color. It helps brighten his day.
"The pink house kind of calms you down a little bit."
This is how Emilio's choice makes him feel. Pink to him is a soothing color, given the fact that he is undergoing medical treatment. Looking at the pink house relaxes him. When he was four years old, he was in a car accident that left him paralyzed from the waist down. He underwent dozens of surgeries when he was a teenager and ended up in a wheelchair. Emilio's house has earned mixed reactions from the neighbors. Although the neighbors say that Emilio's pink house is affecting property values in the neighborhood, he says that there is no homeowners' association.
Some of the residents have taken to social media, saying the pink paint looks like Pepto-Bismol. Rodriguez says he's going for pink slime. Other residents feel that Emilio can do what he likes with his house. "To each his own," says one woman. Another resident, Manuel Alvarado, lives a couple of blocks down the pink house. According to him, the pink house definitely adds a twist to the neighborhood and that there is no other house like it. Alvarado supports the pink house's look.
