Kathie Lee Gifford's television career spans five decades. For instance, not many people know that the famed talk show host was once a vocalist on the game show Name That Tune. Gifford sang on the show for four years, from 1974 to 1978. As an actress, Kathie Lee Gifford was also part of the cast of Hee Haw Honeys, a show that met with little success and was eventually canceled that same year. In 1985, Gifford joined The Morning Show on Regis Philbin's invitation. The talk show duo's chemistry was an instant hit and it quickly bolstered the show's ratings. The program was later renamed Live! With Regis and Kathie Lee, and became nationally syndicated and aired from 1988-2000.
Kathie Lee Gifford then joined NBC's Today as co-host with Hoda Kotb. The dynamic pair attracted viewers and became a popular talk show duo. On her eleventh year on the show, Kathie Lee announced last December that she would be leaving the Today show.
The video shows a goodbye message from Regis Philbin to Kathie Lee on her last day on the Today show. Her long time friend and former talk show partner gave a touching message on video and said that the fifteen years he spent with her, from 1985 to 2000 were the best part of his life.
"We stayed friends through the entire game and it was a lot of fun."
Regis went on to wish her the best in her career and encouraged her by saying,"Where you are right now, I know you're going to be moving on to a great new career, making movies. And since I've seen the first one, I know you're going to be a great success. I mean it." The last part of Philbin's message was appreciation of Kathie Lee Gifford as a person and how he will hold on to the memories of the years they worked together on Live! With Regis And Kathie Lee.
"I want you to know how I will always remember the great times that we had working together, and how you are as a person. Just great." Kathie Lee is moved to tears and can be seen on the video mouthing the words, "I love you, Reg."
Like good friends who sometimes get together to do some catching up, Kathie said of Regis Philbin, "He called me yesterday. He and Joy called me yesterday and we had a lovely talk. He's coming back to Greenwich for the summer so we'll be seeing him." True friendship is most certainly displayed. See Regis' touching words to Kathie Lee below.
