Kids really do have the purest of heart. They value friendships, treasure memories, and pour all they've got when it comes to people they love- and that includes dogs.
Leo Downs practically grew up with a dog. His mother Katie Downs was pregnant when the family got a puppy named Mellow. The dog has been loyal to the family and particularly caring when it comes to Leo.
After Leo's birth, Mellow acted not just as his companion but also his friend. They were practically inseparable. Even when Leo finally got his bunk bed, Mellow was the one he shared it with.
Unfortunately, it came to the end of Mellow's life and the whole family missed him. The loss was so bad that Leo's parents decided not to get a dog for a while. As someone who really likes pets, Leo didn't find the idea comforting.
He would always ask his mom to get another dog. At times, he'll beg his father Chris.
His parents didn't actually reconsider their decision until they saw a dog who was put up for adoption. Named Nutty Buddy, this dog looked exactly like Mellow when it was still a puppy. The resemblance was so striking that Leo's parents rushed to put an adoption application for the dog.
Then, they decided to surprise their young child. They told him that they needed to stop by the shelter to give some donations. As Leo was waiting, a staff member came out with a puppy in his hands.
And as soon as Leo saw the dog, he started bursting into tears. He was so overwhelmed that he had to go to his father a couple of times for reassurance.
When Leo realized that the dog was his, he became even more emotional. The hallway was filled with his crying voice but his mom was quick to reassure that Leo was just really feeling happy at that moment.
Children should be given the opportunity to own a pet. It won't just teach them about responsibility, but it can also help them be more social, active, and respectful. It's also a good way to teach children about companionship.
Of course, owning a dog is a great responsibility. This is why getting one should be a decision that everyone in the family agrees to. When you get a dog for your child, it's important that you remain supportive and encouraging as you guide your little one.
Leo and his parents are truly inspiring for the way they show their passion for dogs.
