Woman Yells At Girl Outside Of Target Then Man Intervenes

It is not uncommon to see kids outside of shopping centers selling treats to raise money. Be it Girl Scout cookies or candy for a school fundraiser, a lot of people are drawn to these booths and enjoy the opportunity to help out.
If someone doesn't want to contribute, they typically utter a quick "no thanks" and keep it moving. Unfortunately, not everyone is so kind. One young girl learned this the hard way when she set up shop outside of a California Target to sell candy.
Patrons entering and exiting the store watched as this scene unfolded, and no one knew how to respond or what to do. One observer, Andy Lizarraga, whipped out her phone and started recording video of the incident. She uploaded the video to Facebook, where it ended up being viewed by more than six million people and shared more than 73,000 times.
In a post accompanying the video, she mentioned that some of the passers-by approached the woman and told her to leave the little girl alone. The older woman didn't listen, continuing to harass the juvenile candy-seller until tears started to slip from her eyes.
Finally, one man had had enough. A local businessman by the name of Jay Lopez had been observing the situation for a few minutes, and as time went by he grew more and more uncomfortable watching the scene unfold. When the woman finally threatened to have the girl arrested, he knew he had to step in.
Jay first chastised the woman for yelling at the teenager and told her that she should be "ashamed" of herself. The woman directed her ire away from the teenager, and toward Jay.
She asserted that she had nothing at all to be ashamed of, and that it was Jay who should feel shame for "being so ignorant." By this point, Jay had enough of the woman and realized he had a way to both end the conflict and help the kid.
Jay pulled out his wallet and asked the teenager how much her entire box of candy cost. She was selling it for one dollar a piece and had about 80 pieces of candy left in the box. It was then that Jay declared he was going to buy all of it and hand out the candy to the other shoppers around him.
The woman, still up on her high-horse, seemed stunned by this, and then declared that she wanted to see him pay for it all. She also said that she was trying to defend the teenager, despite apparently threatening to have her arrested.
The elderly woman's approach may have been cruel and too aggressive, but there have been reports through the years of people taking advantage of kids selling candy for false charities. However, from the reports of the witnesses, it doesn't appear that this young woman was selling them for any charity at all, but merely was trying to make some pocket-money.
Jay dismissed this reasoning, saying that scolding the teenager isn't helping her, even if she was part of such a ring. Standing with her arms crossed like a pouting a teenager, the woman watched as Jay walked into the store to get cash to pay for the candy.
When Jay returned he bought all the candy, and then passed it out, free of charge, to people in the parking lot. The elderly woman didn't appear to be interested in getting a piece of candy for herself.
While it's true some children can be taken advantage of when they are hired to work selling candy or anything else, the way this woman handled the situation is not a good way to look out for these kids. For Jay, he wasn't concerned with larger, alleged problems, but simply did what he could to help a person in trouble.
