Marine Learns His Girlfriend Is Taking Someone Else To Prom

When teenagers finally reach their senior year of high school, they have two things to look forward to at the end of the year - graduation, and prom! After the sweet sixteen birthday party, the senior prom is the next pivotal moment to happen in a young woman's life.
18-year-old Skylar Fontaine was looking forward to dressing up and dancing the night away at the prom, but then her Marine boyfriend, Gage Moak, bailed out on her! She wasn't about to miss out on this once-in-a-lifetime event.
Skylar thought this might happen, which is why she already had a backup date on the hook. When the whole family learned who their sons girlfriend was taking to prom instead, they lost it.
The last time Skylar saw her boyfriend was in January, when he came back for a short 10-day visit after finishing boot camp. She was looking forward to seeing her sweetie again, but the poor girl was devastated when she found out that Gage couldn't get away from his soldier duties.
Not to be deterred, Skylar decided to make the best of the situation by taking someone else instead. As she waited for her alternate prom date to arrive, her family quickly realized that Gage personally knew this guy. However, since the Marine was over 1,000 miles away from her home in New Orleans, the only way he would find out is if someone else spilled the beans!
Both sets of parents were actually there to photograph the big event on their cell phones. That's because Skylar's "date" was actually Gage's younger brother Clay Jr. On her Twitter feed, the pretty teen said:
"My boyfriend is a Marine and isn’t home to take me to my senior prom... so his little brother stepped in and took his place. Needless to say, this girl is so happy."
Skylar saw a little Marine costume online, and thought it looked absolutely precious. She spoke to Gage's grandmother and mentioned how wonderful it would be if the two of them could get dressed up for the prom and send him pictures.
Skylar didn't actually take Clay Jr. to the prom, but the little boy was excited to play make believe and take pictures for his older brother! As for Skylar, the photo op was cathartic for her - it helped ease the pain of missing him.
"I did this for my loving boyfriend who misses his family that he’s been away from for the past 6 months. That’s all I care about. He is missing his little brother grow up. The least I can do is something like this for him, for the sacrifice he is making."
The photos were sent to her boyfriend, who was overcome with emotion when he saw what she had done. The sentimental family man is homesick, and he thought her sweet gesture was absolutely amazing!
Skylar told PEOPLE that it was Gage's dream to become a Marine:
"I’ve been at his side throughout the entire process of him becoming a Marine and because of that, we share a special bond. He is upset he cannot he here in general to watch his siblings grow, experience my milestones with me, and see his family and friends."
Skylar said that having a loved one in the military changed her perspectives and priorities, and she now cherishes the little things in life. And who knows, there might be a little Marine in this couple's future. She should probably hang onto that adorable costume, just in case!
